I: Introduction
Because we notice that even though the Ministry of Education trying to change the teaching system. But they forget that you also need good furniture for the students. The furniture is so old and broken that it doesn’t motivate the students to learn better or the teacher to make the lesson interesting.
We did an individual research in our schools where we are working and we came up with a lot of problems to solve. We collaborate with each other and by affinity mapping we make the decision for School Furniture. With this subject we would like to achieve that the Ministry of Education can finally realize the importance of school furniture for both the student and teacher. That is the reason why we decided to design school furniture that can create a more interactive and collaborative learning environment.
Our big dream is to create a 21 century classroom, but because of the cost we will begin to create true scamper 3 examples of furniture for students. We hope to presented our creations to the Ministry, particular schools and Multi Nationals. Through our own website and email we will communicate with them
II: Background and Research
The education system in Suriname has for the students just an individual desk and a chair. That is already retrieves, because we live in a time where it all about collaborative learning and ICT. That’s why we choose to design these kind of furniture that can connect to the way of learning nowadays.
We did the research in our own schools. And we saw that furniture was the most important one, because we have to work with old, dirty and sometimes broken furniture. Because it is a forgotten part in the school it is always about the curriculum but seldom about the furniture, that is why we choose school furniture.
III: Prototype
Because of our goal to design school furniture that can create a more interactive and collaborative learning environment, we decided to;
A. Create by collaborative Sketching and majority voting a 21 century classroom.
The outcome is a classroom with:
- 1 smart board (in the front of the class)
- 2 white boards one at the left and one at the right side of the class
- Group of student desk and seats (3 to 5 children in a group)
- 1 shelf for schoolbooks / bags
- 1 teacher desk ( D – form) and seat
- In every group laptops on the desks
B. Create by scamper desks and seat for student
We do that by making groups of two with the following assignments:
· Create a 21 century student desk whit seats
· As you designing, thing about the collaborating part in class
· Make your design child friendlY
In groups of two we are working scamper out
Final models true scamper ( schoolfurniture for STUDENTS)
Model I : Brigette Cotino and Jerryl Purperhart
This model contain 5 round tables connect to each other with 2 seats in a half circle.
-
Model II : Sylvia de Rooy and Afanaisa
A grouptable in the form of a big + for 4 children
Model III : Wilma Bintho and Angelique Amiena
Individual table with at one side a normal desk to work and the others side a digital desk.
You can also put these tables in a group
IV: Feedback and Redesign
Feedback we receive after our second presentation:
- It is a practical and good plan
- Not only discuss the plan with the Ministry of Education , but also with particular schools
- It is also good to look for multi nationals to adapt the plan
- Think of the security of the 21 century classroom
- Don’t worry about the cost when you come to the ministry
We use the DeBono thinking and Decision Matrix to describe the cost, material, time, effort to build the final prototype:
Let’s describe the cost, the material,
the time and the effort
Brigette
Yes, let’s do that. Every multinational that
will finance a project will know the cost.
Angelique
We can’t do that by our self, we have to ask
someone that makes desks and chairs
Sylvia
We can’t get that for free. Some money is needed to make a budget. And we don,t
have that Afanaisa
May be I can look if there is
someone that will help us for free
Wilma
I am concern about model 3,
because model 3 “is a big one
Jerryl
We have to go for it and try to paid the
cost for the budget by our own
Angelique
Ok. This what we shall do:
Seek someone for the budget for the models
By decision matrix we will look for our self
which models needs more effort
After that we will meet again to make a
action plan. Brigettte

* We look al over the market what the price will be and make one budget for this classroom
VI: Testing and Improve
To test this project we had an interview with three school leaders. The following questions were ask:
Questions:
1. Would you like to have a model class like we have describe at your school?
2. Why not or why do you want it?
3.There are 3 models for the school furniture for the students.
Which of the models would you like to have in your school, and why?
school A school B school C
Queation 1: yes yes yes
Question 2 : School A: We want to go along with time
School B: ICT in school is now very important
School C: For the students this is a very great opportunity
Question 3:
School A: I choose model 1 because at my school the students are working in groups we are working with the curriculum from :”Ik geloof in jou” (I believe in you)
School B : I am going for model 2 because with these kind of desks you don’t need a lot of it like the square desk
School C : For me model 2 because we are ict minded at this school.
VII: Conclusions and Future work
We want to have model class with the furniture. And if they like concept we want bring it to the other schools.
Conclusion:
The interview with some schools will show that the 21 century classroom as model is welcome
The next steps will be:
May
- Discussions with the ministry of education
- Discussions with particular schools
- Writing a good project for two multi nationals ( Grassalco and Staatsolie )
- Budgeting for the 21 century classroom and the 3 furniture models for children
June
- Submit the project for the multi nationals
- Use the internet to stay in contact with the ministry and the multi nationals
